One of the most common tasks I do with Gimp is to seperate a part of the photograph, so I can use it in my Flash projects later. At first I had problems when it came to a objects with hairs - fortunately I’ve learnt quite easy way how to do it. So - here it is.
We’ll use this nice photo to demostrate it.

In this tutorial I’m going to write about how to prepare nice cartoon, based on simple shapes with gradient fills.
Although it’s hard to make detailed graphics this way, the cartoons have one strong advantage - you can scale it downto a very small size and it’s still clear - that’s why it’s perfect for logos and icons.
First we start with a sketch - in our example I’ve made a very nice bear - his name is Teodore.

If you would like to learn more about how to draw cartoons, or would just like to get inspired - here are some books fror you.
Ben Caldwell (check his official site btw.) is great and very experienced cartoon designer. He share his knowledge in two tutorial-type books called “Action Cartooning” and “Fantasy Cartooning”.
There are descirbed examples of great cartoon sketches, the whole design process is shown step by step.
You can also find some design tips, commonly made mistakes - and a lot of more.


Those two books helped me a lot in my work - check them yourself, you won’t regret it.

Walking character is surly one of the hardest things to animate.
In this short tutorial I would like to show you that it doesn’t have to be that hard:)
The tutorial is aimed for Flash, but you can get the idea for any other animation authoring program.

There are several ways how to animate a walking person - I’ll try to cover them all.

Here’s a little tutorial about how I do flash cartoons. I have to say that I didn’t go to any art school, flash school or whatever. I bet there’s a better way to do it - but I’m pretty happy with mine. (if you know how to do it better - I would love to hear that).
